Very rare and of great interest
Lot 721
THRACE. Chersonesos. Circa 480-440 BC. Diobol (Silver, 10 mm, 0.81 g, 6 h). Rider on horse prancing right, holding reigns in his right hand and two spears in his left; behind countermark composed of three circular and one tear-shaped element. Rev. XEP Beardless head (Demeter?) to right, wearing alopekis cap; behind, grain ear; all within incuse square. BMC 8 (as Potidaia in Macedon). HGC 3.1, 648 (as Potidaia in Macedon?). SNG Copenhagen 316 (as Potidaia in Macedon). Very rare and of great interest. Somewhat porous, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

The reading of the legend as XEP, which is very clear on this example, makes an attribution to Chersonesos much more probable than the old attribution to Potidaia, which was based on similarity of types.
